The exact date to do a meter reading - or face being overcharged on bills - has been revealed. Anyone with a traditional meter - so not a smart meter - has been told to take electricity and gas bill readings as close to Wednesday October 1 as possible.

Without doing so, those on a standard variable tariff could be faced with higher bills. BBC and ITV star Martin Lewis' team at Money Saving Expert say: "The easiest way is to take a picture of your meters, so you have the readings to hand.

"Then you can log in to your online account and enter the readings. Most also let you send readings via text message, or through mobile apps such as WhatsApp.
