A string of three separate shootings within 24 hours in Newark has left one man dead, another victim fighting for their life, and gunfire rattling a community already on edge.

In the first deadly encounter, according to information sent by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office , the violence began in Newark’s West Ward, where residents in the Vailsburg section told RLS Media they reported to police repeated bursts of gunfire early Friday, September 26.

At approximately 2:36 a.m., Newark Police were dispatched after a ShotSpotter alert in the area of Halsted Street and Norwood Place.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man inside a Honda Fit in front of 74 Smith Street.
