Deion Sanders' Colorado team just might be playing for its Big 12 life Saturday night.
The Buffaloes (2-2, 0-1) host undefeated No. 24 BYU, and will fall to 0-2 in conference play with a loss. That's not a great place to be, especially heading into a road game the next week against undefeated No. 25 TCU.
BYU and Colorado met in last year's Alamo Bowl — a 36-14 Cougars' win — but there's no Shedeur Sanders under center for CU. In his place is Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, who led the Buffs to a 37-20 win over Wyoming with four total touchdowns. Deion Sanders has settled on Salter after trying out Ryan Staub and freshman Julian Lewis at points earlier this season.
The Cougars are breaking in a new QB of their own with Jake Retzlaff now at Tulane. True freshman Bear Bachmeier hasn't been asked to do too much with BYU leaning on running back LJ Martin. Martin, who ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns in BYU's Alamo Bowl win, ranks ninth nationally with 114 rushing yards per game.

Colorado should come into this game highly motivated to avenge its loss in the Alamo Bowl from last season. While it is two different teams, those factors matter, even if Deion Sanders says otherwise. Pat Shurmur will have to devise an exceptional plan to crack a BYU offense that currently boasts one of the best defenses in the country, allowing only 5.3 points per game.
I do think Colorado struggles to move the ball at times and to stop BYU's elite rushing attack. However, I do believe the Buffs are better prepared for this game, playing against far superior competition. Their defense should be able to confuse true freshman Bear Bachmeier and force him into some bad decisions.
I don't think this one will be too high-scoring, and the Buffs should defend their home field well, but will it be enough? — Charlie Strella, Buffaloes Wire
