OVO Energy is handing customers free electric blankets to help keep warm this winter. The energy provider has pledged £56million in extra support from October 1 as the new, higher Ofgem price cap kicks in next month.

On its website, OVO says : "This application takes around 2 minutes to complete. You'll need to tell us your monthly disposable income. This is the money you have left after paying tax, rent or mortgage payments, and essentials like utility bills.

"You can use this online budgeting tool to help you work it out. If you're not an OVO or Boost customer, check with your energy supplier to see what support they offer. Ask Bill also gives free, independent energy advice."
