Water suppliers are dishing out £194 to Universal Credit households. Eligible families who claim Universal Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) are failing to claim discounts worth an average of £194 per year.

Over 3.8million households who qualify for discounted social water tariffs are not taking advantage of these schemes.

Bills across England and Wales increased by an average of 26% in April 2025, which will increase the number of families that qualify for social tariffs schemes. Policy in Practice advised: "We have not sought to model this, meaning our estimate of the number of households missing out will be conservative in 2025/26.
