Karur: What was meant to be a celebratory moment for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) turned into a day of mourning when ten people, including three children, lost their lives during a political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur. The deaths occurred after extreme overcrowding led to a stampede-like situation as thousands of supporters waited for hours in anticipation of Vijay’s arrival.

According to eyewitnesses, supporters of TVK began gathering in large numbers well before the event. By evening, the crowd had swelled beyond the capacity of the rally ground. Many people had been standing under the hot sun for nearly six hours. As the crowd grew denser, movement became increasingly restricted, and restlessness spread.
