(WKYT) - A man who had lived in Mount Sterling for over a decade was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New York and died while in custody for less than 24 hours.
After imprisonment, the family of Santos Eliberto Beanegas Reyes is now questioning what led to his death while raising funds to get his body back to central Kentucky.
Brandee Contreras Rivera is trying to figure out what happened to her brother-in-law, Santos Eliberto Beanegas Reyes.
“He was an amazing person,” said Rivera. “He was good-hearted; he’d give you the shirt off his back.”
Reyes, who was born in Honduras, lived in Mount Sterling for more than a decade, working in roofing, mowing and tobacco.
Family members say Reyes was deported after he was arrested for a DUI.
