CINCINNATI —
A grieving mother is remembering her son as a devoted father and beloved community member after he was shot and killed in Evanston.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday near Montgomery Road and Brewster Avenue, not far from Xavier University. Police say Bates later arrived at UC Medical Center with a gunshot wound, but he did not survive.
Now, his mother, Monique Norris, is left with the heartbreaking task of explaining his death to her 4-year-old granddaughter.
"He was a father. He wasn't a weekend dad. He was a father," Norris said. "He'd been there since day one, when her mom found out she was pregnant. He did what he needed to do as a father."
