A 39-year-old man walking on Market Street is dead after an early morning crash.

The Chattanooga Police Department says around 1:54am they responded to 30 North Market Street after a 19-year-old woman driving south hit a pedestrian.

Witnesses saw the pedestrian in the roadway before the crash happened.

Police say the driver was unable to stop in time, but she remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

Firefighters with the Chattanooga Fire Department responded and attempted life-saving measures; but the person struck succumbed to his injuries on scene.

Police did not identify the man, but said they notified his next of kin.

The crash happened just hours before the start of the Chattanooga IRONMAN.
