London city hall plans to offer one of its community centres as a warming site in extreme cold, after it was caught flat-footed last winter.

It’s part of a new response framework for London’s homeless population for this winter and next, coming to Monday’s meeting of city council’s community protective services committee. When temperatures drop to –15 C, or –20 C with wind chill, the city will open 60 warming spaces at Boyle Memorial community centre on Charlotte Street near Old East Village.

It comes after the city hurriedly opened the Carling Heights Optimist community centre as a warming site in late January for three days when temperatures fell to –30 C.
