A former Labour Cabinet minister has urged Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to rule out a challenge to Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.

Alan Johnson, a former Home Secretary, told Mr Burnham that he was not doing the country 'any favours'. It came as speculation mounted over whether the three times elected Mayor was plotting a bid to become leader of the Labour Party.

Mr Burnham has twice previously stood to become leader of the party, losing to Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn respectively. The Mirror reports that when speaking to the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg at Labour's conference in Liverpool, Mr Johnson said: "When we were here in 2009 colleagues were coming to me to tell me I should stand against Gordon Brown."
