Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has refused to confirm or deny whether he is going to take over a north west Parliamentary seat - the first step in a rumoured leadership bid.

Our reporter on the ground in Liverpool called an audience with the mayor the 'probably Labour Conference’s best-attended fringe event'.

During the session, which was a live recording of the Guardian newspaper's politics podcast, Mr Burnham has neither confirmed nor denied if he has had a conversation with an existing north west MP to take over their seat.

Instead he responded that he could not launch a leadership campaign without a seat: "There is no ability for me to launch a campaign.
