A recent decision by the U.S. Justice Department to file a court brief arguing against Michigan’s attempt to shut down Line 5, an oil and natural gas liquids pipeline vital to petrochemical industries in Sarnia, is encouraging, says the city’s mayor.

Mayor Mike Bradley has been arguing since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump that the pipeline Michigan’s governor, and others, have been attempting for several years to shut down could also be at risk from the president’s hostile trade policies.

But the U.S. position in the recent court brief matches that of the federal government in Canada, and the previous U.S. administration, that “this is a federal issue” and “the state has no right to interfere,” Bradley said. “That was welcome.”
