Ten people were shot, one fatally, Sunday morning at a Grand Blanc church that was also engulfed in flames in what authorities described as an attack on the church by a lone man.

The shooting was at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, just north of Oakland and Macomb counties, Grand Blanc police said. Officers there said the shooter was also killed, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Police urged people to avoid the area.

As authorities gathered on the scene with smoke still filling the air, dozens of family members gathered at a reunification site at a theater on Holly Road across the street. Some hugged one another and cried.

Good Samaritans brought bottles of water and service dogs for emotional support.
