A 40-year-old man has been charged after a gunman opened fire from a boat into a waterfront restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, killing three people and injuring at least five others on Saturday night.

Authorities identified the suspect as Nigel Max Edge, who faces three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. Southport’s public information officer, ChyAnn Ketchum, confirmed the charges on Sunday.

Police said Edge carried out the shooting in a “highly premeditated" manner.

“We believe this was a targeted location," Southport Police Chief Todd Coring told reporters, adding that the suspect acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
