Punter Cameron Johnston suffered a season-ending injury last year when he was run into while punting.
It happened again but Johnston appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Johnston went down with a leg injury after a roughing-the-kicker penalty in the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
New Orleans linebacker Nephi Sewell, elevated from the practice squad this week to help on special teams, crashed into Johnston’s planted left leg. Johnston immediately slammed his helmet to the turf in frustration before hobbling off with trainers.
The 33-year-old had his leg wrapped and was warmed up on the sideline. Backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky put his helmet on in case he needed to take over holding duties on a field goal but Johnston came back into the game to hold
