Authorities say “time is of the essence” as they continue an extensive search operation to find a four-year-old boy who went missing in the South Australian outback.

August, who also goes by Gus, was reported missing after he was last seen at his family's homestead in mid-north South Australia at 5pm on Saturday.

Authorities said the terrain was dry and isolated, with the boy’s home located 40 kilometers south of Yunta, which is about 200km east of Port Augusta, the nearest major town.

South Australian police have described Gus as caucasian with long blond hair.

When he vanished, he was wearing a grey sun hat, light grey long pants and boots, and a cobalt blue t-shirt with a yellow minion on the front, police said.
