CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. — One person is dead and another is injured after a wreck that happened around 6:45 a.m. Sunday in Claiborne County on United States Route 25E, south of Tom Ball Road.

According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2002 Ford E55 driven by 38-year-old Santana Onofre of Mexico was traveling northbound when he failed to maintain his lane of travel and went into the southbound lane, colliding with 75-year-old Merle Chamberlain of Kentucky.

The head-on crash caused both vehicles to come to an uncontrolled stop.

While both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, the impact of the collision injured Onofre and killed Chamberlain, according to the THP.

Charges are now pending against Onofre pending the outcome of the investigation.
