KLEIN, Texas — Two people were killed when a small plane crashed and erupted into flames at Hooks Airport in north Harris County on Sunday. The two were the only ones on board.
The crash happened at David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport off Stuebner Airline north of Spring Cypress Road.
According to Sgt. Richard Standifar with the Department of Public Safety, the pilot and passenger were taking off from Hooks Airport on their way to Lubbock. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported a mechanical issue and tried to turn around.
"He got fairly low to the runway," Standifar said. "I don't necessarily think he was lined up exactly to the runway, and he landed the plane well shy of the runway. Once the plane made contact with the runway, it burst into flames."
