Another day of protests and clashes with the police took place on Sunday in Lima, the Peruvian capital, where youth groups protested against President Dina Boluarte's government and Congress for their lack of response to the escalating violence, extortion and murders that plague them.

Hundreds of demonstrators from youth organizations calling themselves ‘Generation Z’ clashed with the police at night in the vicinity of Congress, in the centre of Lima.

There, they were repelled by uniformed officers lined up with shields and helmets who threw tear gas bombs until they were forced to retreat to the nearby San Martín square.

For the second consecutive night, the young people tried to remove the metal fences and barriers protecting Peru's Congress.

These groups are demanding answers from the Boluarte government in the fight against corruption and rejecting its economic and social policies.

They also accuse the police of being infiltrated by mafias and are calling for its restructuring.

Recently, the police force admitted to the leaking of information in the intelligence department in charge of investigations into organized crime.

Last week, protests by ‘Generation Z’ also ended in clashes with the police in the same area of the capital.
