Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has announced changes to how it will collect taxes for fire protection.

Reeve Jim Funk says the result is that most homeowners will probably pay less in taxes, while places like churches and schools will now contribute for the first time.

Funk says Council has given third and final reading to Fire Protection Special Service Plan No. 14. He notes this will replace their existing fire protection plan, which has been in place since 2016.

"The purpose of the plan is to allow Hanover to raise taxes for fire protection over all properties in Hanover," he says. "Without it, properties like churches and schools would be exempt."
