India and Bhutan are starting a railway service for the first time. Two railway lines have been announced for this purpose.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated in a press conference that these railway lines will be laid from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, and from Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse in Bhutan.
Currently, trains run only up to Hasimara in West Bengal, but they will now run directly to Gelephu in Bhutan. A total of ₹4,033 crore will be spent on these two railway projects, which are 89 kilometres long.
