As the sun rose in Grand Blanc Township, the police barricade around the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road had narrowed to about 100 yards.

The charred, partially burned church was still visible and the pickup truck that crashed through door just a day ago was outside, with two, American flags, hanging limp in the truck bed.

A shooting attack on the church left at least five dead , including the gunman, and investigators continued to search for answers, including what would have driven someone to commit violence.

Eight more were injured and are being treated at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital.
