NEWARK, NJ/UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- The first batch of players is heading to Utica from the New Jersey Devils, as the parent club made its first cuts from training camp on Monday.
The Devils announced on Monday, September 29, that 16 players will be joining the Utica Comets after being cut from the training camp squad. Six of those players have been loaned to Utica, nine of them were officially released from NHL camp and one was put on waivers due to their veteran status.
The player put on waivers -- with the intent to send him to Utica -- was forward Ryan Schmelzer. Last year's captain for the Comets led that team in points with 44.
