LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - In times of need we call on first responders to be there, running into the unknown.

On Monday, Louisville’s Catholic community honored their sacrifice with the annual ‘Blue Mass’.

Monday’s mass is timely as those in the Catholic faith are marking the Feast Day of Saint Michael, the patron saint of first responders.

Inside Jeffersonville’s Saint Michael the Archangel church, dozens of police officers, firefighters and other emergency agencies gathered.

The Blue Mass service gave thanks to current and former first responders while paying tribute to those who have died in the line of duty.

For the Louisville Fire Department it means honoring those dating back to the year 1858.

Monday’s service emphasized that those who serve our community are not alone.
