GRAND BLANC, Mich. — As chaos erupted inside a Michigan church Sunday morning , Paul Kirby was sure he wouldn’t make it out alive.
“I felt some shrapnel hit my left leg and then, as I’m running to the door, a bullet grazed or went past me, hit the door on the left side of me about one foot away,” Kirby told WTOL 11. “I was panicking and trying to get through the doors as fast as possible, and just expecting a bullet in my back. Kirby, a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was attending services with his wife and two sons when police say 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford crashed a pickup truck through the church doors, opened fire on worshippers and set the building ablaze.
