Starbucks announced recently that 900 of its workers will be laid off, and coffee shops will be closed around the country — including dozens in New York City, some of which are unionized.
The local store closures come after an announcement from Starbucks that select locations would close after a review spanning all of North America as part of the chain’s “Back to Starbucks” plan.
Brian Niccol, chief executive officer of Starbucks, said in a letter to employees on Thursday, that those shops that are not creating “the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance” will be closed.
The closings will cost the chain about $1 billion, according to a public regulatory filing.
The list was outlined in a public Google document
