Kenneth Gainwell’s rise to prominence as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back has been remarkable, especially in the last two weeks. After stepping in during the Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, he rushed 19 times for 99 yards and scored twice, while also catching six passes for 35 yards. This strong showing came after he scored a touchdown the previous week, marking three total touchdowns in just two games.

Gainwell’s combination of power running and receiving ability demonstrated that he is emerging as Pittsburgh’s RB1, a position he looks unlikely to give up anytime soon. His performance has also made him a must-pick in fantasy football leagues, as he now handles a significant workload that the Steelers rely on heavily.

Gainwell’s journey to this point hasn’t been straightforward. Originally drafted as the 150th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, Gainwell spent four seasons in Philadelphia as mainly a backup and role player. He displayed flashes of brilliance, but he was never the lead back, managing 1,182 yards rushing, 721 yards receiving, and 13 touchdowns during his time with the Eagles.

Despite being a reliable short-yardage and receiving option, he couldn’t secure a starting role there. His time in Philadelphia also included a Super Bowl appearance with the Eagles, where he contributed both as a runner and receiver, though his role remained limited.

In the 2025 offseason, Gainwell signed a one-year contract with the Steelers. Initially behind Jaylen Warren on the depth chart, his role expanded dramatically due to Warren’s injury.

His standout performance against the Vikings revealed what Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin had praised—the faith in Gainwell's professionalism, work ethic, and skill. With this breakout game, he is not only proving he can handle a full workload but also making it clear that he might have found a role he isn’t willing to relinquish.

Going forward, even when Warren returns, Gainwell is expected to continue sharing carries and remain a vital part of the Steelers' offense.

In summary, Gainwell has transitioned from a backup role in Philadelphia to a potential lead back in Pittsburgh. His recent three touchdowns in two weeks, combined with nearly 100 yards rushing and versatile receiving numbers, make him a key player to watch this season both on the field and in fantasy football. Steelers fans and fantasy managers alike have much to be excited about as his star begins to shine brightly.
