HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The floodwall in Huntington is 85 years old.
Officials say it is long past its expected lifespan.
Because of this, it requires regular maintenance and upkeep -- also, including moving the earthen levy alongside it.
Recently, encampments made by the homeless population along the floodwall have complicated the process.
On average, three full days a month are used to address issues created by the camping.
Debris and tents are placed in an area that needs to be clear at all times.
Storm water utility officials say there are even instances of theft.
There are also remnants of fire kindling.
This raises concern because the flames can get out of control, as they did Friday of last week.
