LINCOLN, Ala. (WIAT) -- A 3-year-old child allegedly held a handgun that fired, leading to their relative dying in Lincoln on Monday morning.

According to Lincoln Interim Police Chief Scott Bonner, the family member was shot after the gun discharged. The victim died at the scene.

The shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Taryn Trace. There were other residents present when the 3-year-old obtained the gun, Bonner said, but they were asleep.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting as of Monday afternoon.
