NORMAN — OU football quarterback John Mateer tested his limits a bit during practice on Monday.

The Sooners' quarterback, five days after undergoing successful surgery on a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand, was present at practice for stretches and walkthrough.

Mateer was so into it, the coaches had to pull him back.

"From the very beginning, he's out there stretching with the guys," Venables said Monday night during his coach's show. "He's going to push the limits on everything when it comes to his rehab and getting back."

Venables told his star quarterback to let his injury heal and that he isn't going to "defy the odds." Despite suffering the injury early against Auburn, Mateer finished the game, passed for 271 yards and rushed for the winning touchdown.
