DARE COUNTY, N.C. — Dare County is preparing the roads for potential storm impacts that could roll into the area.
NCDOT had crews placed along Highway 12 all day Monday, working to keep ocean water away from the road.
Crews have worked for days to build up sand dunes along NC 12, south of the Basnight Bridge, to protect against potential impacts from storms off the coast.
“Those [dunes] are meant to protect the road as best we can from ocean overwash. It’s not a guarantee, but it helps,” Tim Hass from NCDOT said.
The tall sand dunes act as a barrier to stop water from rolling onto the road.
Hass told 13News Now that crews staged equipment at more flood prone areas along the highway, so if sand blows over or water starts to pile up, crews can react as quickly and safely as possible.
