One of the two drivers who died in a North Bergen crash on Sunday night was being followed by a local police officer, the state Attorney General’s office said.
The North Bergen police officer, who was driving a marked police vehicle, was following a car when it collided with another uninvolved vehicle at 11:18 p.m. on Tonnelle Avenue between 50th and 51st streets, according to a statement from the AG’s office.
The two civilian drivers were seriously injured in the crash and later died, the office said.
The identities of the drivers were not released Monday evening.
The crash is under investigation by the office, which gets involved whenever a person dies during an encounter with police.
