ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Thousands make the trip along Williamson Road everyday, and starting on Monday that drive will look a little different.
The normal two lane road will be turned into one lane with a center turning lane.
This configurations aims to make the road safer as from 2019 to 2023 the the city saw 49 fatalities.
“18 of those 49 fatalities were pedestrians,” Transportation Division Manager Dwayne D’ardenne said. “One in three of those pedestrian fatalities happened right here on Williamson Road. One in five of the vehicle fatalities happened right here on Williamson Road. So we need to change that narrative. We need to adjust Williamson Road and make it better and safer for everybody.”
