A large-scale search operation has ended in tragedy after the body of an 80-year-old man was recovered at a popular Devon beach. ‌

Emergency services, including police, Coastguard teams , lifeboat crews, and the South West Ambulance Service, were called to Sidmouth beach on Monday after a person was spotted on the rocks near Jacobs Ladder. ‌

A lifeboat was launched in an attempt to bring the man to safety, but despite the efforts of rescuers, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Police have confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious and that his family has been informed. ‌

During the rescue, the seafront was temporarily closed to allow emergency services access to the beach, reports the Mirror.
