DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) -- The MTA has approved to increase the base subway and bus fare from $2.90 to $3.

The change is expected to take effect on January 4, 2026.

The subway and bus fare last went up in 2023, when it rose from $2.75 to the current fare of $2.90. Fares normally increase every two years, usually in august.

The seven-day unlimited subway and bus ride prices will be capped at $35, down $1 from the initial planned increase to $36.

The age of eligibility for $1 LIRR and Metro North "family tickets" will go from 12 to 17.

In another change, LIRR and Metro North tickets will be valid until 4 a.m. the following day, instead of expiring after 4 hours.

MetroCards will no longer be available for sale after Dec. 31.
