The afternoon after Gov. Jeff Landry asked President Donald Trump's Administration to approve a federally funded deployment of Louisiana National Guard troops in the state's urban areas — citing crime in Baton Rouge and other cities — Mayor-President Sid Edwards says extra manpower could provide assistance that could make Baton Rouge safer.

But, in a statement Tuesday, Edwards did not wholeheartedly endorse Landry's effort and said he will be working closely with state and federal officials to clarify details prior to any deployment.
