Gov. Jeff Landry’s request for a federally-funded deployment of 1,000 National Guard troops to urban centers throughout Louisiana comes amid a controversial push by President Donald J. Trump to use the military to crack down on crime and protests in America’s cities.

It was not clear Tuesday exactly how those troops would be deployed. But Landry's letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mentions New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport as cities with law enforcement manpower shortages and elevated crime rates.

If approved, it would be far from the first time Louisiana has used the National Guard for assistance. But previous deployments have generally been tied to specific emergencies, such as Hurricane Ida and the Jan. 1 terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
