BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - It’s a financial reality that has hit hard for the Hokies. More money equals more wins, and Virginia Tech is betting on it.

A month ago, we heard it loud and clear: it costs money to win, and it costs money to lose.

That was Virginia Tech Athletic Director Whit Babcock’s bold message. A wakeup call to spend bigger if the Hokies want to compete in today’s era of college sports.

Now, that call has been answered.

“Today’s resolution unlocks the door to future success,” Tim Sands, Virginia Tech President, said.

That’s why the Board of Visitors voted Tuesday to approve a budget with nearly $230 million more for athletics . The money will be spread over four years — with a $47 million bump this year alone.
