NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Staten Island Rail commuters may need to take this into account when traveling this fall.
There are several reasons why MTA transit lines can be delayed on a given day, including scheduled work, medical emergencies and incidents on trains.
There's another threat to delays in the eyes of the MTA: fallen leaves.
Yes, you read that right. Fallen leaves on tracks can be hazardous for trains during the fall season and into winter, according to the MTA.
"When crushed by train wheels, fallen leaves leave a slippery residue on the rails," the MTA alert said.
The alert on the MTA website only applies to the Staten Island Railway, saying trains may run at slower speeds or slower than usual when entering and exiting stations. This will increase travel time for normal trip
