WASHINGTON, D.C. – With nearly two months to go in the Atlantic hurricane season, flood insurance for homeowners could be at risk if the government shuts down on Wednesday.

Authorization for the National Flood Insurance Program will expire tonight if Congress fails to pass a spending bill.

If there is a lapse in the flood program, new claims can still be made but policies cannot be sold, and existing ones cannot add new coverage.

Millions of policyholders rely on flood insurance in areas deemed high-risk.
