The union representing Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga began hosting strike training meetings Monday, marking a significant escalation in a contract dispute that has lasted more than a year.
The United Auto Workers, which represents Local 42, says the meetings are part of preparations as employees continue to negotiate their first-ever collective bargaining agreement. The sessions are being held at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers facility in Chattanooga.
Union leaders accuse Volkswagen of violating federal labor law by failing to bargain in good faith. In response, UAW members have begun circulating pledge cards in support of a possible strike authorization.
Volkswagen issued what it called its “final and best offer” two weeks ago. But UAW’s lead bargainer Chuck Br
