Michigan schools heavily dependent school lunch program could be scaled back dramatically.
Over the past year the Michigan Legislature have been in debate about appropriate funding and budget for Michigan’s school lunch program. The deadline for this decision was originally due on July 1, but got postponed and is not due until Oct. 1. I think the state should keep providing free school lunches for all students that attend public schools in Michigan.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020 many students and families have benefitted from this program. In 2024, $160 million was allocated to it and in 2025, lawmakers approved $200 million to be given to the program. This saves families up to $850 per year per student.
