Man, 42, dies after hit-and-run on Kauai; driver arrested

Kauai police have arrested a 36-year-old woman after an alleged hit-and-run near the 7-Eleven in Hanamaulu last week resulted in the death of a man.

Police said the hit-and-run occurred last Friday night, and that responding officers found a man lying on the side of Kuhio Highway at about 9:15 p.m. They determined that the man had been struck by a vehicle, which had fled the scene.

The man was airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition, where he later died on Sunday, despite life-saving efforts. He has been identified as Alfred Lopes, 42, of Hanamaulu.

Police were able to track down the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident, a 2021 Chevrolet pickup truck, which displayed visible damage consistent with a pedestrian collision.
