Hawaii island police have reclassified an investigation from negligent injury to negligent homicide after the death of a male pedestrian who was struck by a car in Hilo on Aug. 2.
According to police, at 10:04 p.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian on Kuawa Street near the intersection with Manono Street. Investigators determined a 2013 Toyota Corolla sedan driven by a 56-year-old Hilo man was traveling east on Kuawa Street when the vehicle struck the man, who was in the roadway but not in a marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and later medivaced to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died on Sept. 12, Hawaii police said in a Monday news release.
