ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Rockford man has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for buying and selling illegal firearms, the same crime that sent his mother to prison last month.

Angel Barrera-Esteves, 27, pleaded guilty to the charges of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and selling firearms without a license earlier this year.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between 2021 and 2022, Barrera-Esteves defaced and then sold guns, some of them acquired illegally by his mother, Jessica Barrera-Esteves.

Authorities said once the serial numbers were removed on the weapons, Barrera-Esteves sold them to people he knew "would use them for illegal purposes."

He also sold ammunition that he received through his mother, as well as a Glock auto-sear.
