Amid a wave of Planned Parenthood closures across the country, Louisiana's only two clinics shuttered their doors Tuesday — ending medical services, education and advocacy that the organization has provided to some of the state's most vulnerable residents for more than 40 years.

Louisiana now becomes the fourth, and most populous, state where Planned Parenthood will no longer be present.

The organization, caught in the political crosshairs of national abortion debates, said earlier this month that they are at risk of closing nearly 200 clinics in 24 states due to financial woes and political attacks.

On the final day of being in business people gathered outside of the Planned Parenthood clinic in New Orleans where they carried handwritten thank you notes that read, “We appreciate all you have done” and “Heroes work here.”

Among them was Victoria Williams, the co-founder of Birthmark Doula Collective.

"It really makes me emotional just thinking about people not having access to a safe space where they can receive trusted, evidence based information about sexual health or reproductive health," she said.
