According to the sheriff's office, suspects are contacting businesses to purchase items using a credit card. After the item is picked up, sometimes by a courier, the business then receives a chargeback from the credit card company, which reports the transaction as fraudulent or stolen.
Officials warn the community to be cautious of large or unusual credit card purchases, especially from new customers.
Verifying the identity of the person picking up items is also key to avoiding scams, said Placer sheriff.
