BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) - Several Southwest Michigan organizations came together on Tuesday for the groundbreaking of a new affordable housing development in Benton Harbor.
It’s called “Project T,” and it’s set to bring 28 new homes to the former Mercy Hospital campus.
Construction is starting on 14 duplex buildings. The homes will be available for families earning below the area median income.
The homes will feature a sustainable design, financing options and pathways to homeownership.
“This project is a love letter to my city,” said Erin Hudson, executive director of Harbor Habitat for Humanity. “We have a great need for affordable housing in our community. So many teachers, firefighters nurses, clergymen need a place to live, a place to call home.”
