LACKAWANNA, N.Y. — The steel mills which were once the lifeblood of Lackawanna's economy have long gone silent.

In their place, a number of smaller businesses have sprouted.

Another development reflects an effort to transform a site once known for soot into one of solar power.

In November of 2016 one of the largest fires in the recent history of Western New York consumed a portion of the sprawling former Bethlehem Steel plant on Lake Shore Road.

The smoke that billowed over Lackawanna several days has obviously long dissipated. Now, the sun reflects a change according to the city's mayor.

"While remembering this site's history we're moving on from the past and looking forward to modern redevelopment and growth here," said Lackawanna Mayor Annette Iafallo.
